A Day To Forget for The Blues

A disappointing display on a scorching hot afternoon saw Oxford lose at home to Newcastle. In each half, Newcastle scored four converted tries, plus a penalty goal just before the hooter.

Oxford won the first game played against Gateshead, but have lost every game since they changed their name to Newcastle. This was Oxford’s heaviest defeat for almost a year, and also only the second time ever that they failed to score in a game.

Newcastle full-back Lewis Young scored a hat-trick, including the first two tries of the match. For both of those he juggled the ball but was able to get control before an Oxford tackler could take advantage of the error. His third was near the end of the game after catching a cross-field kick.

Young also stopped what might have been Oxford’s best chance to score. After Newcastle fumbled the ball during an attack. Oxford attempted to use the free play to break but near the half-way line Young was able to use his pace to get in position to gather the kick at the second attempt.

Benn Hardcastle was on kicking duty for the visitors, scoring all of his 10 attempts, and he also pitched in with a try in each half. Other Newcastle tries came from Derrell Olpherts, Aaron Teroi and Stephen Snitch.

Ball boys and girls from Radley C of E Primary School were on duty on the stand side of the ground. Midway through the half there was a loud cheer when for the first time one of them got to field a kick.

There were some encouraging hit-ups from Harvey Burnett, Jordan Siddons and Lewis Bienek. And for the second week Oxford managed to keep possession a couple of times from Kane Riley’s clever kick-offs.

But overall this was probably a day to forget.
